How shockwave therapy works

High-energy acoustic pulses are delivered through a handheld applicator to the painful area, waking up your body's own repair response.

01

Evaluate

Our doctors examine your pain, history and goals to confirm shockwave is a good fit.

02

Target

Gel is applied and the applicator is guided to the precise area of tissue that needs attention.

03

Stimulate

Pulses increase blood flow, break down scar-like tissue and trigger cellular repair.

04

Recover

Most patients return to normal activity right away and build results over a series of visits.

Questions, answered

Does shockwave therapy hurt?

You'll feel a tapping or pulsing sensation. Some areas can feel tender during treatment, and we adjust the intensity to keep you comfortable.

How many sessions will I need?

It varies by condition and how long it's been present. Many care plans include a series of sessions spaced about a week apart. Your doctor will build a plan specifically for you.

When will I notice results?

Some patients feel improvement soon after treatment, while for others the biggest gains build over several weeks as tissue heals. Individual results vary.

Is there any downtime?

Most people resume normal daily activities right away. We may recommend modifying high-impact exercise briefly between sessions.

Who shouldn't have shockwave therapy?

It isn't appropriate for everyone, including people who are pregnant, have certain bleeding disorders, or have implants or active infection in the treatment area. We screen every patient before treatment.

Do you take insurance?

We accept many plans, including HealthPartners and VA Community Care. Call us at (715) 941-5100 and we'll check your coverage for you.
